Bio
Adam Carberry is an Associate Professor in the Polytechnic School within Arizona State University’s Fulton Schools of Engineering. He often teaches use-inspired design or introductory materials & manufacturing at the undergraduate level and Engineering Education and Systems (EESD) graduate courses. Teaching recognition includes a Top 5% teaching award in 2015-2016.
His primary areas of interest within the broad discipline of engineering education include: 1) developing new classroom innovations and assessment techniques (e.g., alternative pedagogies, reflection, and grading systems), and 2) identifying new ways to empirically understand engineering student and educator experiences (e.g., assessments of personal beliefs, expectations, values, risk-taking, intuition, and mindsets). Funding for his work has come from National Science Foundation, The Lemelson Foundation, The Kern Family Foundation, and The Leona M. and Harry S. Helmsley Charitable Trust. Notable projects include Orienteering for Us All (E4USA) and the Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Off-Grid Nanotechnology Enabled Water Treatment (NEWT). His work has been recognized by an American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Educational Research and Methods Division Apprentice Faculty Award and a Frontiers in Education New Faculty Award. He was also recently selected as a Fulbright Specialist where he visited École Nationale Supérieure des Mines in Rabat, Morocco.
Prior to coming to ASU, he briefly worked at Sikorsky Aircraft before joining the Tufts’ Center for Engineering Education and Outreach. He has facilitated and lead LEGO-based outreach opportunities for K-12 teachers, students, and FIRST coaches since 2005 all around the world. He has served in many volunteer roles through ASEE. Currently, he is the past chair of the Research in Engineering Education Network (REEN) governing board and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Engineering Education.
