Jack Welch

Jack Welch received the B.A. degree from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1955 and the Ph.D. degree in engineering science from the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley), Berkeley, in 1960. He has been a Professor at UC Berkeley in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Astronomy Department, and the Graduate School (1960–present). His primary areas of research have been millimeter interferometry and frequency-independent feeds and receivers, with application to the interstellar medium, star formation, and SETI. He was Director of UC Berkeley Radio Astronomy Laboratory (1971–1996). Dr. Welch is the recipient of the Balthasar van der Pol gold medal from the International Scientific Radio Union and he held the Marilyn and Watson Alberts Chair for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence within the UC Berkeley Astronomy Department (1998–2011). Today he is modifying the Allen Telescope Array feed to work at higher frequencies with improved system temperatures, and planning observational projects that will utilize the unique capacities of the ATA system. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1999, and is a member of the SETI Board of Trustees (1984–present; Vice President 1984–2000).
