Thomas Esch

Thomas Esch was born in Mayen, in 1958. He studied process engineering (and power engineering) at the RWTH University of Aachen (and the UNLV Las Vegas), where he received the Ph.D. degree from the Institute for Applied Thermodynamics with a dissertation in the field of tribology in internal combustion engines, in 1992. After working at FEV Motorentechnik in Aachen as the Department Head of Engine Mechanics, he joined, in September 1993, as a full-time Professor of Thermodynamics and Combustion Technology at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences. Since 2007, he has been working as a course Director of the Master study course Vehicle Powertrain Technology. Besides numerous publications in journals and patents, he wrote as a coauthor of the book Commercial Vehicle Technology. His research interest is on internal combustion engines and synthetic fuels, fuel cell systems for aviation and autonomous flying, electric compressors and drive systems, aviation certifications for piston engines and the climate impact adaptation in the automotive industry. He is a member of the board of directors of the IEF (International Energy Foundation) and a board member of the Solar Institute Jülich, since August 2009, AIAA, VDI, SAE, IEF, and DGLR.
