Sandeep Mannava, MD, PhD is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine; arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder; as well as shoulder reconstruction and replacement. Dr Mannava also has a clinical and research interest in orthopedic regenerative medicine--including the use of platelet rich plasma and bone mineral aspirate concentrate (BMAC, stem cells) to treat various orthopedic conditions. Dr Mannava partners with patients to determine their goals and expectations, then provides the medical care--both surgical and non-surgical--to obtain excellent outcomes that help patients of all ages achieve and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. He is a compassionate physician scientist, an advocate for athletes, and a thought leader in orthopaedic sports medicine. Dr Mannava enjoys innovating and educating in the areas of orthopaedic surgery, arthroscopic surgery, biomedical sciences, and sports medicine. He provides high quality, evidenced based, and cutting-edge care to all of his patients. Dr Mannava is one of the most published orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons in the western and central New York region. Dr Mannava has published over 70 manuscripts and book chapters, was awarded several competitive research grants, and invented a surgical device that was patented. Additionally, he has presented over 90 research abstracts at regional, national, and international conferences. He has expertise in regenerative medicine, in vivo biomechanics, the biology of aging, shoulder surgery, athletic knee injuries, and the overhead athlete. He remains an active volunteer physician with the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) and continues to provide medical care for U.S. Olympic athletes while on faculty at the UR Medicine Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation. Dr Mannava is also a team physician at The College of Brockport (SUNY). Originally from Utica, New York, Dr Mannava graduated from Cornell University cum laude, with high honors in biological sciences, and distinction in research. He then attended medical school at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Syracuse--Upstate Medical University. Dr Mannava completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Wake Forest University. During his residency, he graduated from the Wake Forest Graduate School of Arts and Sciences with a PhD, awarded for research related to rotator cuff disorders. During his time at Wake Forest, he was chosen as an American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) resident leader and emerging leader. As a chief resident, he was recognized with the department's resident teaching award for his contributions to resident and medical student education. During his time at Wake Forest, he assisted with physician coverage for Wake Forest Demon Deacon baseball and Winston-Salem Dash minor league baseball. Dr Mannava went on to complete his arthroscopy and sports medicine fellowship training at the prestigious Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado. While in Vail, he helped in the treatment of professional and elite athletes from the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, and numerous Olympians while serving as a fellow in Vail, CO. Dr Mannava moved to Rochester, New York with his wife, Dr Kathleen Mannava, a dermatologist and dermatopathologist at UR Medicine. Dr Kathleen Mannava is a native of Spencerport, New York and the Drs Mannava are looking forward to raising their two children closer to their families. The Mannava family is looking forward to being part of the Rochester community and contributing their skills and talents to the region. Outside of work, Dr Sandeep Mannava enjoys spending time with his family, tennis, golf, skiing, as well as watching professional and collegiate sports.
