Sampath Prahalad received the medical degree from Sri Venkateswara Medical College, India, in 1991. After working as a Pediatrician in the U.K., from 1992 to 1994, he completed a pediatric residency at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (1994–1997) followed by a Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (1997–2001). In 2001, he joined the Faculty of Pediatrics, University of Utah. Since 2009, he has been a Faculty Member at the Emory University School of Medicine, where he is currently the Director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology. He has a track record of research on understanding genetic and epidemiological factors influencing childhood autoimmune disorders. He has ascertained biological material from over 3000 subjects for translational studies. These efforts have resulted in over 100 scientific papers, review articles, and book chapters. His articles have been cited over 4900 times. He is a nationally recognized expert on the genetics of juvenile arthritis. He has been invited to present his work at National and International meetings. His current research is focused on juvenile arthritis and childhood onset of lupus erythematosus. He is a compassionate physician who takes pride in providing excellent pediatric rheumatology service to children in Georgia and neighboring states. He has been recognized as the “Top Doctor” in Pediatric Rheumatology by Atlanta Magazine for the past five years. He has grown the division to seven faculty members and established a Fellowship Program. He also enjoys his role of a mentor to medical and undergraduate students, residents and fellows, many of those who have received awards. He is on the Leadership Council of the Arthritis Foundation. He regularly participates as Camp Physician at Camp AcheAway. His dedication to children with rheumatic diseases was recognized by the Arthritis Foundation with the Hugh McLeod Award in 2016. He received the prestigious Henry Kunkel Young Investigator Award for his research in 2012. He has successfully received Grant funding for his work from NIH as well as other foundations.
