Ricardo Calado

Ricardo Calado is the Coordinator of CESAM’s Research Group “Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture”. Born in 1976, he graduated in Biology in 1999, obtained his PhD in 2005 in Biology (specialization in Animal Biotechnology) from the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University (FCUL) and his Habilitation in Biology in 2020 from the University of Aveiro. After founding the spin-off company LusoReef, the first Portuguese Enterprise dedicated to the aquaculture of marine ornamental species, he started a post-doc in 2006 at the Associated Laboratory CCMAR (Univ. of the Algarve), and retained a bond to the private sector as a consultant for aquaculture and marine life support systems. From 2008 to 2013 he was an Assistant Researcher at the Department of Biology (dbio) and CESAM (Univ. of Aveiro, UA), where he is now Principal Researcher and develops independent research on Sustainable Blue Growth, namely in the research fields of Applied Marine Ecology, Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology. He has chaired several sessions in international meetings and has given multiple oral presentations as plenary speaker. He is/has already been PI of research projects adding up to > 4M euros of funding to UA, several of them in consortium with SMEs. Author of more than 230 publications in international journals listed on WoS, he was the leading editor of the book entitled “Aquaculture of Marine Ornamental Species” and authored the book “Marine Ornamental Shrimp”, both published by Wiley. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) and the Journal of World Aquaculture Society (Wiley), he already peer-reviewed articles for more than 60 journals listed on WoS and also acted as peer reviewer of projects and grants for national and international financing agencies. He is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Aquaculture Fish and Fisheries (Wiley). He is a member of the executive council of the Blue Bioeconomy CoLab B2E (where he represents UA).
