During this time, he modelled and optimised a 619-element Yagi antenna array that operates at 205 MHz. This is the first radar in the world to operate at this frequency. He has published more than 200 refereed journal papers and numerous conference articles. Under his research guidance , 22 Ph.D.s in the field of microwave antennas have been generated. He also holds several patents in the areas of antennas and material science. His research areas include microstrip antennas, dielectric resonator antennas, superconducting microwave antennas, reduction of radar cross sections, and polarization agile antennas. Dr. Mohanan received the Career Award from the University Grants Commission in Engineering and Technology, Government of India, in 1994. He has received UGC BSR award from the University Grants Commission in Engineering and Technology, Government of India, in the year 2016. In 2015, he got the Outstanding IEEE Member Award: IEEE Technical Activities.He is also the recipient Dr. Vasudev award in the year 2016. He is a Reviewer of the ieee transactions on antennas and propagation and IET Electronics Letters.
