Oswaldo Baffa received his B.Sc. degree in physics and his M.Sc. and Dr.Sc. degrees in applied physics from the University of São Paulo, São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1973, 1980, and 1984, respectively. He was a John Simon Guggenheim fellow at the Department of Medical Physics of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1986–1988). In 1981, he joined the Departamento de Fisica, Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciencias e Letras de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo as an assistant protessor, and was promoted to professor in 1996. His research interests were directed initially toward biophysics to understand structural aspects of hemoproteins, and later to medical physics. In medical physics, he has been working in biomagnetic techniques for the study of gastrointestinal motility, electron spin resonance for dosimetry and dating, and magnetic resonance imaging for dosimetry, spectroscopy, and functional magnetic resonance imaging, among other applications. He is a member of the Brazilian Physical Society, the Brazilian Association of Medical Physics, and the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences. Currently, he is also an associate researcher to the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) level 1B, and has been appointed as a visiting professor to the Department of Medical Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has published more than 180 articles in scientific refereed journals.
