SCIENTIFIC WORKS
are devoted to the physics of strength and plasticity of various materials: aluminum high-strength alloys and foams on the aluminum base, refractory metals (Cr, Mo, W and alloys on their base), diamond, covalent crystals (semiconductors Si, Ge and AIIIBV type), WC-Co hard metals and ceramics. A big attention is given also to the physics of strength of amorphous metals (on the iron and aluminum base), quasicrystals on the aluminum base and sintered materials. Structural investigations and theoretical works are directed to the explanation and optimization of mechanical properties of these materials.
New methods of indentation technique were worked out for the determination of dislocation mobility and mechanical properties of crystals (plasticity characteristic of materials, construction of stress-strain curves etc.). Phase transition during indentation was discovered in 1972.
Theoretical works are devoted to the temperature dependence of yield stress for crystals with high Peierls-Nabarro stress, to the tunneling of dislocations in covalent crystals, to the recrystallization of dispersion hardened materials, to the mobility of dislocations during indentation, to the ductile-brittle transition in crystals, to the influence of nano-size precipitations on the mechanical properties of aluminum and other metallic alloys etc.
The concept of characteristic deformation temperature (the maximum temperature, at which the Peierls-Nabarro stress influences essentially on the yield stress) was elaborated. On this base the scientific ground of three temperature ranges of deformation (cold, warm and hot deformation) and mechanical behavior of crystals in these temperature ranges was given.
Elaborated high strength refractory alloys with increased ductility on the base of Mo, Cr and W were used in the former Soviet Union and awarded by Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR.
Elaborated new high-strength aluminum alloys (patent USA “High-strength aluminum alloys composition” US 7,060,139 B2 Jun.13, 2006, International patent “Casting alloy of the AlMgSi type” WO 2011/090451 A1 Apr.28, 2010 and some patents of Ukraine and Russia) are of great interest for companies in USA, Europe and Canada.
There were joint scientific projects in the field of high-strength aluminum alloys with Air Force Laboratory (Deyton, USA); Ashurst Company (USA); EADS (Airbus) company (Munich, Germany), Boeing Company.
I was a head of 7 regular international projects of STCU and 2 partner projects.
Now I am a head of the Eureka project E!4918 – ALMAG.(cast piston aluminum alloys for automobile industry).
Among new aluminum alloys elaborated in the Institute for Problems for Material Science (IPMS) in my Department there are: high-strength Al alloys doped by Sc, high-strength cast aluminum alloys, aluminum alloys for elevated temperatures, with dispersion hardening by nanosize quasicrystalline particles, high-temperature aluminum alloys on the base of aluminum intermetallics, powder metallurgy aluminum alloys and aluminum foams with special properties.
