Principal research interests: epidemiological (including genetic) risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA), gout and calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition; clinical studies of OA and gout; community-based clinical trials; systematic reviews and meta-analysis; placebo response in clinical trials and contextual response in clinical care; and clinical guideline development. Published extensively in these areas and is co-editor of the Oxford Textbook of Osteoarthritis.
Strong interest in undergraduate education. Author of several books and chapters relating to musculoskeletal core clinical skills. Editor of the BMJ specialist journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases from 1992-9 and a founder member of COPE (Committee of Publication Ethics).
