My research is focused on six often overlapping areas: (1) delineating the mechanisms by which novel superoxide dismutase compounds can act as a clinical radioprotector or mitigator of adverse normal tissue events or act as a radiosensitizer when combined with high dose per fraction radiation and immune oncology; (2) determining whether the same superoxide dismutase can act as a radiation countermeasure after whole body exposure to high LET radiations that simulate those found in deep space; (3) delineating and exploiting the biological effects of tumor treating fields for cancer therapy; (4) developing biomarkers for the radioresponse to high LET radiation exposures including the development of biomarkers of carcinogenic risk; (5) enhancing carbon ion radiotherapy through combined modality approaches; and (6) determining the biological mechanisms that drive the enhanced tumor response seen with Personalized Ultra-fractionated Ablative Radiotherapy (PULSAR). My research is currently funded by NASA, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, foundations and industry. I serve on editorial boards for Scientific Reports, Translational Cancer Research and the Publications Committee of the Congress of Space Research (COSPAR). I am a member of the Scientific Program sub-Committee and Executive Committee of PTCOG. I am a member of the National Council of Radiation Protection (NCRP) and serve on the NCRP Board of Directors. I also serve as a member of the GSI Bio-PAC committee. Lastly, I direct the radiobiology courses for the Medical Physics graduate program and the Radiation Oncology Resident training program at UT Southwestern and I am a former faculty member of the NASA Space Radiation Summer School.
