David G. McLone was born in Flint, Michigan on January 8, 1938. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1965. In 1974 Dr. McLone received his Ph.D. in Neuroanatomy from Northwestern University. Dr. McLone completed his neurosurgical residency training at Northwestern University Medical School in 1975. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. McLone served as a Lt. Commander for the United States Public Health Service at the National Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Presently, he is the Chairman of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago and a Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School. He was President of the Chicago Neurological Society from 1984 to 1985 and President of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons from 1990 to 1992. Dr. McLone is a founding member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. He was Chairman of the AANS-Pediatric Section from 1976 to 1989, and serves as President of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dr. McLone has served on numerous editorial boards including Childs Brain, Fetal Medicine, and Neurosurgery. He has been the Editor of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dr. McLone has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. Over the years, Dr. McLone has been the recipient of numerous awards for his work involving children born with myelomeningocele. In addition to his clinical activities, he has served as an advisor to the Spina Bifida Association of America and the Illinois Spina Bifida Association since their inception. He has testified before the Senate Subcommittee on Family and Human Services’ Hearing entitled “The Reauthorization of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment and Adoption Reform Act” and at the Hearing for the Commission on the Protection of the Handicapped. Most recently, he participated in a Consensus Conference on Syringomyelia. Dr. McLone founded a camp for handicapped children which services 175 children each summer. This year marked the sixth session of the camp which was started in 1988. An endowed Chair has been established in his name at Children’s Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University. He was a founding member and first Chairman of the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dave McLone married Norene Ecker in 1962 and they have five children, Kelly, Mary, Paul Michael and Shanon, and five grandchildren.
