Mauricio Scanavacca received the M.D. degree from Santos Medical Science School, Santos, Brazil, in 1978. He completed the Cardiology Fellowship in 1982 at the Heart Institute of São Paulo University Medical School, São Paulo, Brazil, from where he also received the Doctoral degree in electrophysiology. He has been an Electrophysiologist at the Heart Institute for the past 25 years, during which time more than 12,000 ablation procedures have been performed. He is currently a Professor in the postgraduate program at São Paulo University Medical School and Supervisor of the Electrophysiology Laboratory, The Heart Institute of São Paulo, São Paulo. As a member of the Arrhythmias Unit, he has contributed to the development of new techniques used today in catheter ablation. His current research interests include developing new methods for treating heartbeat irregularities such as atrial fibrillation.
