I focus on modulation of the immune response in a variety of ICU-related conditions. I co-supervise11 PhD students and numerous undergraduate students on projects ranging from sepsis-induced immunoparalysis, immune (de)activation after trauma, the link between iron metabolism and inflammation, the interplay between oxygen status and inflammation, and interplay between viral and bacterial infections. With my research, I want to contribute to the reduction of mortality of critically ill patients.
