Bio
Martin Stutzmann's research deals with both fundamental and applied aspects in current semiconductor physics. The focus is on the production, nanostructuring and biofunctionalisation of semiconductors with large bandgaps such as gallium nitride, zinc oxide and diamond, but also of thin layers and nanoparticles of silicon. Potential applications focus on bioelectronic sensors, model systems for quantum information processing and semiconductor-based photovoltaic and thermoelectric energy conversion.
After studying physics in Marburg, Paris and Stanford (doctorate in 1982), Martin Stutzmann was a postdoctoral researcher at the Xerox Research Center in Palo Alto (California) until 1985. He then became a permanent scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart. In 1993, he was appointed to the chair of experimental semiconductor physics and at the same time as one of the directors of the Walter Schottky Institute at the Technical University of Munich.
