Dr. Malhotra’s group has identified a number of genes associated with increased risk for schizophrenia, determined their relationship with important clinical manifestations of illness, including cognitive impairment, and examined the role of genetic factors in predicting individual responses to pharmacological treatment. His group published the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) of schizophrenia and found evidence for a role of specific genetic factors vulnerable to antipsychotic drug-induced weight gain, a common yet potentially serious side effect of treatment. More recently, Dr. Malhotra’s group has used neuroimaging methods to identify neural circuitry associated with treatment response and side effects. He currently is principal investigator on three NIH R01 grants to further dissect these relationships between neuroimaging and key aspects of schizophrenia. This work is multidisciplinary and involves multiple investigators at the Feinstein Institutes and around the world.
