John Malcolm Owens Arnold

After moving to Canada in 1985, Malcolm continued to work as a cardiologist, his main research and clinical area of interest being in heart failure. He received funds from the major funding bodies in Canada for research, as he mentored many under and postgraduate trainees. He served on many major trial committees, both national and international, that resulted in changes in the way heart failure was treated and he felt fortunate to have seen and participated in enormous changes that occurred in this field.

He was the inaugural chair of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Heart Failure Guidelines Program and received 24 postgraduate awards and many Visiting Professorships. He published over 230 scientific manuscripts, theses, editorials and reviews, as well as numerous abstracts, book chapters/monographs, CME publications and academic lectures upon invitation. In collaboration with several colleagues, he discovered the mechanism and importance of the grapefruit juice interaction with many common medications. He also co-founded and chaired the Canadian Heart Failure Network in Canada. The many investigative and teaching awards that Malcolm received throughout his career reflected the quality and recognition of him and his contributions to the improved treatment in heart failure. His continued thoughtful care of patients was a priority and appreciated by many.
