Galaxies are in constant evolution under the influence of the matter cycle within them: gas clouds collapse, form stars, feedback and turbulence redistribute matter and energy into the interstellar medium. It is one of the big unanswered questions in modern astrophysics which processes drive this multi-scale matter cycle. Observational constraints can now be obtained by combining multi-wavelength observations of a large range of environments, to characterise the successive steps of this cycle.
