Bio
Lakshman Subbaraman is an Associate Director (Clinical Projects) for Vision Care Clinical Development & Medical Affairs at Alcon, where he has been since 2018. Previously, he was the Head of BioSciences, Senior Clinical Scientist and Research Associate Professor at the Centre for Ocular Research & Education, School of Optometry & Science, University of Waterloo, Canada.
Lakshman was named in the list of “200 most impactful optometrists in the world” (Efron N, et al. Global optometrist top 200 research ranking. Clinical and Experimental Optometry 2021; https://doi.org/10.1080/08164622.2021.1878863). He was also listed in the “top 10 most impactful authors in the field of silicone hydrogel contact lenses” (Efron N et al. Journal of Optometry 2021). Expertscape, a biomedical-focused website that objectively ranks scientists and researchers by their expertise, recently ranked Lakshman as the number 10 global expert in the past decade in the field of contact lenses.
He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed & professional articles, three book chapters and over 170 published abstracts in the areas of contact lens discomfort, contact lens interaction with the ocular surface & ophthalmic drug delivery. He has presented at numerous conferences and continuing education programs in fifteen different countries.
He is a recipient of the American Optometric Foundation’s William Ezell Fellowship and the Ontario Ministry of Research & Innovation Award. He is on the editorial board of the British Contact Lens Association’s peer-reviewed journal, Contact Lens & Anterior Eye and has served on the editorial board of American Academy of Optometry’s (AAO) journal, Optometry & Vision Science. He has previously served as the chair of the scientific program committee of the Canadian Optometry Research Conference, and as a member of AAO’s Research Committee and Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society’s (TFOS) Young Investigator Committee. He was on the committees of the TFOS Contact Lens Discomfort Workshop and the Dry Eye Workshop 2 (TFOS DEWS 2). He serves as a referee for over 35 Ophthalmology, Optometry & Biomedical journals and several international research granting agencies. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the International Society for Contact Lens Research (upon invitation only), TFOS & ARVO.
