Kristin Eckardt

After my study of biology I have worked for a biotech company that focuses on drug discovery in diabetes and related metabolic disorders. Later, I have joined the German Diabetes Center as a PhD student and received my degree in 2008. Currently, I am working as a Postdoc in the Paul-Langerhans-Group for Integrative Physiology at the German Diabetes Center. My research is focused on the role of skeletal muscle in the development of insulin resistance and its underlying mechanisms. One of my main topics is the crosstalk between adipose tissue and skeletal muscle via adipokines. More recently, I have focused my research on skeletal muscle as an endocrine organ and the role of myokines as mediators of the beneficial effects of exercise on health. My areas of expertise include myokines, skeletal muscle physiology, mitochondrial function, glucose and lipid metabolism, and insulin signaling
