He had worked on a broad range of topics in plasma physics, electron beam physics, pulsed power, and lasers. His research encompassed all approaches to fusion energy: inertial, magnetic, and z-pinch based. He led a team that developed the science and technologies needed to build a repetitively pulsed, large area, high energy electron beam source. The team first applied the technology to develop the science and technologies for a durable and efficient electron beam pumped krypton fluoride laser that can meet the requirements for fusion energy. He and his team later applied those technologies to a wide range of applications, including material surface modification, fuel reformation, and the elimination of NOx in fossil fuel power plants. After retiring from NRL, he has worked as part of a team to build a laser driven shock facility on the Washington State University-led Dynamic Compression Sector at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, IL, USA.
