Jan Jansen

I'm interested in both physical and biological processes that influence the structure and functioning of species communities. I mainly investigate the relationship between species abundances and environmental variables. Currently, I'm working on the ambitious goal to map different aspects of seafloor biodiversity for the entire Antarctic continental shelf. This project, funded by the ARC, includes (1) extracting species information from thousands of seafloor images using machine learning assisted annotation, (2) generating maps of seafloor food availability that, in combination with other variables such as depth and current speeds, allow better predictions of seafloor biodiversity, and (3) predicting future changes.
