He is a molecular microbial ecologist and ecophysiologist interested in plant-microbe-soil interactions and specifically the functioning of the arbuscular and root nodule symbioses in light of anthropogenic impacts, such as biotic homogenization and alterations to resource supplies. He explores fundamental evolutionary-ecological processes as well as possibilities to translate process understanding to plant production and the safeguarding of the environment. Currently, he works on grasslands.
