Giuseppe D'Auria

Dr. D'Auria work is mainly focused on studying microbial ecology of human-related environments such as the gut microbiome. He obtained the degree in biology at the University of Messina, Italy. In 2004 he obtained his PhD degree studying the microbial diversity of deep anoxic hypersaline basins (DHABs) of the Mediterranean Sea, in the framework of the European Project (FP5): BIODEEP - BIOtechnologies form the DEEP (BIODEEP) at the National Research Council (CNR - Isituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero - Messina, Italy). After this period Dr. D'Auria moved at the Evolutionary Genomics Group at Miguel Hernandez University (Alicante, Spain) improving his skills in bioinformatics and microbial ecology. In 2007, Dr. D'Auria moved to Cavanilles Institute for Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology of Valencia University in the laboratory of Evolutionary Genetics. Here he was involved in the sequencing of the genome of Legionella pneumophila strain Alcoy and in other works such as the study of microbial diversity of Tablas the Daimiel National Park. Then Dr. D'Auria moved to the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of Valencia Region (FISABIO), working in microbial ecology and genetics, developing a research line in Flow Cytometry and Single Cell Genomics studying the human gut microbiota, fractioning populations by fluorescent activated cell sorting (FACS) with a special attention on Clostridium difficile associated colitis. In 2016 he promoted the development of FISABIO Sequencing and Bioinformatics service which was leading for the following three years. Then he spent one year cooperating with the institutional Chair FISABIO - University of Valencia in the organization of several events and courses to promote teaching in bioinformatics and microbial genomics. Since 2020, Dr. D'Auria is in charge of Bioinformatics Service within the Sequencing and Bioinformatics Service of FISABIO foundation. During the SARS-CoV2 pandemic, he participated and promoted the activities for the sequencing of the first Spanish genomes of the virus. During his career he published more than fifty papers indexed in high-impact peer reviewed international journals (h-index: 23; average number of citation per article: 40,6; total citations: 2273; without self-citation: 2230; source Web of Science 30/11/2020). The overall topic of his scientific production is based on microbial ecology and metagenomics of natural environment as well as genomics descriptions of microbial isolates. He participated in three book chapters related with microbial ecology, genomics or metagenomics. He was awarded by the “VI edition of Premios Ideas”, section Life Science of “Fundación Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias”, 2010. Recently, he was awarded, within the section “Science Award” in the XX Edition of the OCR awards from the “Onda Cero Valencia” station for obtaining the first complete SARS-CoV-2 genomes in Spain, jointly with the Molecular Epidemiology WorkGroup Fisabio/University of Valencia.
