Bio
IET Fellow and a Professor at both Tongji University and the Shanghai Research Institute for Intelligent Autonomous Systems. Previously, he was with Imperial College London (2007-2010) and Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs (2001-2007). He is also a member of the Alcatel-Lucent Technical Academy (ALTA), the highest honor for technical excellence at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. Leading the PAI Research Center (https://ai.tongji.edu.cn) at Tongji University, he studies wireless communications & localization/sensing, blockchain, AI, and complex networks, with 120+ papers published and 70+ patents granted/pending.
He has made significant contributions to the technical community by assuming key leadership roles, such as serving as the founding Editor-in-Chief of IET Blockchain, the founding General Chair of the IEEE Global Blockchain Conference, Co-Chair of Community Development of the IEEE Blockchain Technical Community, the Technical Program Committee Co-Chair for the IEEE Future Networks World Forum 2024, and the Director of Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Blockchain Applications And Services.
Prof. Liu has achieved breakthroughs in communication and positioning technologies in complex environments. He pioneered an innovative magnetic communication system for through-the-earth transmission, which won the Grand Prize at the 2014 China International Industry Fair, one of the highest honors in China's industrial sector. This achievement garnered widespread attention from prominent national media, including Guangming Daily and Xinhua News Agency. This work culminated in a recent monograph titled Magnetic Communications - Theory and Techniques, published by Cambridge University Press in 2024.
In addition, he invented an integrated positioning technique called DWELT, which won First Place in Microsoft Indoor Localization Competition and a Gold Medal in the 2018 China International College Students' "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the world's largest student innovation competition. Building on DWELT, he developed an integrated communication-navigation system, which became the official navigation system for the China International Import Expo (CIIE), covering one of the world's largest exhibition centers, the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC). Widely recognized by prominent national media, including China Central Television (CCTV) and China Daily, this work was awarded the China Patent Excellent Award.
Prof. Liu earned his Ph.D. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2001.
