Christopher Levi is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science; Director, Learning Health Systems and Medical Services, John Hunter Hospital Health and Innovation Precinct; Senior Staff Specialist Neurologist, John Hunter Hospital; Conjoint Professor of Medicine, University of Newcastle. He established the Hunter Medical Research Institute/University of Newcastle Stroke Research Program in 1999. The success of this program led to its incorporation into the University of Newcastle Priority Research Centre (PRC) for Translational Neuroscience and Mental Health Research in 2007 and in 2016, the PRC for Stroke and Brain Injury. In 2008, he established the Australian Stroke Genetics Collaborative (ASGC) represents the ASGC on the International Stroke Genetics Consortium meta-analysis group, ‘Metastroke’. Prof Levi led the successful 2016 bid for the NSW Regional Health Partners to gain status as one of Australia’s first NHMRC Centre for Innovation in Regional Health and was the inaugural Executive Director, Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE), University of New South Wales. In addition to his clinical service roles in acute stroke and general neurology, he oversees a broad portfolio of stroke research within his group ranging across animal modelling of stroke, epidemiological and observational studies, clinical trials, through to population surveillance of stroke events. His direct leadership and research activity is focussed on the areas of stroke genetics, advanced acute imaging, and clinical trials in acute stroke including trials focussing on implementation of evidenced based stroke care. He has published over 350 papers in peer review journals, has had continuous NHMRC project grant support for 20 years and receives regular invitations to speak at both national and international scientific meetings. He has a keen interest in health policy, public awareness and community education, featuring regularly in the print media, radio and television.
