Axel Munk received the diploma and Ph.D. degree in Mathematics both from the University of Göttingen in 1992 and 1994 and his Habilitation in Mathematics from Ruhr-University Bochum in 1999. He is currently Felix- Bernstein professor for Mathematical Statistics at the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and director of the Felix-Bernstein-Institute for Mathematical Statistics in the Biosciences at the University of Göttingen. He is elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), of the Institute for Mathematical Statistics (IMS), Fellow of the Max-Planck Society at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, and elected member of the Academy of Science and Humanities at Göttingen. He has been associated editor of the Annals of Statistics and is currently associated editor of Bernoulli, The Electronic Journal of Statistics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series B, and Journal of Nonparametric Statistics. His main research interests are Nonparametric Regression, Signal Recovery, Statistical Inverse Problems, Statistics in Biophysics, Fingerprint Identification and Therapeutic Equivalence.
