He is responsible for the calibration and validation (cal/val) of the SMAP geophysical products, which includes coordinating a large international coalition of participants to collect ground truth data, leading field experiments deploying airborne instruments along with intensive manual measurements, and assessing the performance of the data products. Besides the cal/val work for SMAP, Dr. Colliander has participated in and led several other projects focused on developing microwave remote sensing techniques, calibrating airborne and spaceborne microwave radiometers, and utilizing microwave measurements to learn more about the Earth's geophysical processes.
