PATELLI Alessandro born in Padova, 27/05/1974
The working experience can be divided mainly in 3 periods.
period 2000 - 2004
My activity, carried on between Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL-INFN) and Padova University, was focused on PVD magnetron sputtering technique, the correlation between the deposition parameters and the film growth at the nanoscale, and the use and implementation of various characterisation techniques. In particular I have been involved in the development of EUV radiation mirrors deposited for magnetron sputtering. part of the research was conducted at ESRF synchrotron radiation source (France).
period 2005 - 2015
During this period I worked in the nanofabrication laboratories in Marghera (VE) of the Veneto Inter-University Coordination for Nanotechnologies (CIVEN), subsequently transformed into Veneto Nanotech Scpa. Throughout this period I have carried out the role of management of the group “Technologies in Vacuum Plasmas”, carrying out applied research on commission for companies and developing new lines of research. The group consisted of an average of 3 staff members, with 4 facilities of industrial scale for PECVD and PVD processes. The group had an annual turnover of around € 250k with direct industrial commitments and joint applied research projects.
The work within the nanofabrication laboratories has also offered the possibility of frequent interactions with other disciplines (e.g. biochemistry, polymers and sol-gels).
The strong interaction with the industrial sectors gave me the opportunity to win two Business Plan Competitions and to set up two start-up: Nadir Srl and Krystalia Srl. Nadir srl was founded in 2008 and I was president until 2015: it is a company, still active, which markets atmospheric plasma devices.
The research activity has been focused in particular on the HiPIMS technique and its reactive processes. On this subject I have been involved in the steering committee of the specific COST Action MP0804. An additional topic I started was the development of an atmospheric plasma jets characterised by high density at room temperature and avoiding localised processing defects. The idea was pursued by the investigation of dual-frequency excitation systems. The activity was made possible by regional and national funding and by the coordination of European FP7 PANNA on its potential application for cultural heritage restoration. Moreover, Profitable collaboration has been set also with the sol gels and MOF community on the systems control, characterisation and patterning.
period 2016 - today
In 2016 I started the academic career at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Padua. My research activity is focused on the study of the interaction between atmospheric pressure plasmas and surfaces for the purpose of functionalization or nanostructuring, for applications ranging from photonics to the control of cell growth. In particular I am continuing the development of the dual frequency atmospheric pressure plasma and of its applications.
I supported my research activity through the scientific coordination of the European H2020 FAST project and subsequently with a regional JOINPLASMA project. I am currently in charge of a research fellow and a graduate student, the first focused on the simulation of atmospheric plasmas, while the second on plasma diagnostics by optical emission.
